STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT ASSIGNMENT NO :5 SUBMITTED TO: Mr. PRADEEP RAJ PANDEY SUBMITTED BY: ANJU KOIRALA SECTION: A   Question: Why should Bir Hospital have long term plans? Discuss Answer : Bir Hospital is the oldest and one of the busiest hospitals in Nepal. It was established in July 1889 by Bir Shamsher Jang Bahadur Rana. It is located at the center of Kathmandu city. The hospital is run by the National Academy of Medical Sciences, a government agency since 2003.The hospital provides medical and surgical treatments to people from all across the country. Many patients from the rural areas come to this hospital to get free treatment. Some of the county's top doctors work in this hospital. Every year the Bir Hospital admits 8,354 inpatient, deals with 3, 10,942 outpatient attendances and treats over 60,000 accidents and emergency cases. It has currently 400 beds. The new Trauma and Emergency Block, which will be completely developed within a few months, will add further 200 beds. Beside the general medical service, Bir Hospital provides services in highly specialized areas like Neurology,  Neuro-Surgery, Cardiology, Cardio-thoracic and Vascular Surgery, Burn and Plastic Surgery,  Nephrology, Urology, G.I. surgery, Gastroenterology, Hepatology (separate unit) and Radiotherapy. The Bir Hospital, thus, provides services to the community in most medical and surgical specialty and super-specialties through emergency, outpatient and impatient facilities. Majority of outdoor examination service and indoor beds in Bir Hospital are free. This is the only tertiary referral center in the country which provides such free service. Every year it produces trained post graduates in different subjects of clinical medicine e.g. general surgery, internal medicine, orthopedic surgery, pathology etc. It has become an Internship centre for students who had passed MBBS from China and Russia and other parts of the world. Hundreds of nurses of different levels get nursing training in this hospital. Goal & Objectives of Bir Hospital are as follows:    To make available quality medical service in the whole country.    To produce highly trained manpower in the medical field in the country.    To develop the academy as the national source center to conduct research studies in the field of medical sciences. As we know that long term objectives are set to gain competitive advantage over the competitors and to gain above average return for any organization. Goals and objectives provide a road map that helps keep Bir Hospital on track; they keep the hospital’s  efforts focused on providing the  greatest possible value to the clients they serve; and they help convince contributors that the organization are making a real difference in the world by stating in measurable terms the outcomes they deliver. These objectives should clearly further the enduring purpose of the organization. This means knowing and spelling out for whom the organization exists, and what  benefit the organization seeks to provide this group. Because the goals and objectives define the real bottom line of Bir Hospital , they’re the keys to unlocking support from donors and foundations. Long term plans of Bir Hospital helps it to;    Stimulates thinking to make better use of the association’s resources.      Assigns responsibility and schedules work.    Coordinates and unifies efforts.    Facilitates control and evaluation of the associati on’s activities .    Creates awareness of obstacles to overcome.    Identifies opportunities.    Avoids the trap of linear thinking.    Facilitates progressive advancement of the association’s goal  Thus in my opinion Bir hospital as it is a nonprofit organization it should have long term plans not in terms of gaining the above average return but to gain competitive advantage , utilize its resources in an effective and efficient manner focus on the needs of the clients it serves and have a good image in the public.
