JKH494 D 1  Inaddition,softwaretoolsmustbeprovidedthat . rdlowLosAlamos,users,andthirdpartiestoquicklyandconvenientlydevelopsoftwarespecifictotheuserorthemeasurementtocontrolthebasicinstrumentwedevelop.~spaperdealsmairdywithaminiatureandmorhdarmulti-channelanalyzer(M3CA)anditsapplications.Formorespecifichardware,software,andfunctionaldetails,seeRef.1.2.The systembeingdevelopedOur system,theM3CA,iscomposedofabasicMCA,whichincludeshardwmandfmware,andasoftw~librarythatprovidesaninterfacebetweenprogramswritteninhigh-levellanguagesandthebasicMCA(Fig.1).TheM3CAistargetedatapplicationsthatwefeelamnotadequatelyadtissedbycommercialinstrumentssuchasin-fieldorin-plantmeasurementswheretheinstrumentmustbecaniedbyauserwhoneedshisorherhandsfree.Wemnotdirectlytargetingnetwork-basedsystems,althoughwedohavethepotentialtoconnecttonetworks.Auniqueandsignificantfeatureofoursystemisthatoursoftware allowstheM3CAtobe. easilyintegratedintoanexistingorusercreatedmeasurementsystem,manycommercialsystems~quiretheusermeasurementbebuiltintotheirs~ificsoftwareandopratingsyskm.Oursoftwareflexibilityalsoallowsausertoeasilyimplementnewusersoftwareonvirtuallyanycomputerplatform.Fromthehardwarestandpoint,theM3CAprovidesallthenecessarysupportfortypicallyuseddetectors,bias,low-voltagepwer,andvariabletimecoostants.Theperformanceoftheanalogelectronicsiscomparablewithrack-mountedandmains-poweredsystems(Fig.2).ThepresentM3CAissmallerinvolumethananyotherunit(10x20x 3KH494 D 2  9 cm),andwearereducingitsvolumebyapproximately50 .Itsformfactorallowsittobeconvenientlycarriedonabeltorshoulderstrap.Itisapproximately60 oftheweightofcommercialunitsinitslargerform.Theunitispoweredbya~movable,internal12V,2.2AhNiMHcompu~rbatterythatcanhecarriedinashmpocket.Thebatterylifeisapproximately3.5to4.5hoursdependingontheloadpresentedbythedetector.TheM3CA’Shardwareincludesahigh-petiomtatrceamplifierwithtwoselectabletimeconstan~,tineandcoarsegainadjustments,pulsepile-uprejection(PUR)anddead-timecorrection,andactive,gatcdbaselinerestoration(BLR).ThePURandBLRhaveautomaticthresholds.TheADCisaWilkensentypewith512and4096channelconversiongains.Ithastwo4096channelconversionmemorybanksthatcanbepartitionedinto256to4096channelgroups.Auniquefeatureofthehardwareisdigitaldifferentialnordinearitysmoothing.Thepowersupplybotiprovideslow-voltageandbiaspowerforstandarddetectors.Theprocessorboardhasthreeserialports,16-bitsofbinaryl./O,nonvolatileEEPROMforparameterstorage,andaFLASHROMdiskforprogramstorage.AmorecompletelistoffeaturesisgiveninRef.1.ThefmwareoftheM3CAcontrolsthehardwminresponsetocommandsthatcomeoveraserialinterface.Thecommandsetincludescontrolforeveryhardwarefunction,areadofallstatus,andcontrolandreadbackofresidentgamma-raymeasurementfictions.ThecommandsareserialASCIIstringscomposedofanopcndeoptionallyfollowedbyoneormoreargumentsandterminatedbyacarriagereturn.Res~nsesarcalsoASCIfwiththeoneexceptionofspectraldatatransfer,whichcanheeitherASCIIorbinaryTheserialinterfacewaschosenbecauseitiswidelyusedandavailableonvirtuallyallcomputersandcontrollers.Whiletheserialinterfaceisslowerthanaparallelorbusinterface,thefnwarehas ndesignedtominimizethen~forhigh-datatransferratesbydoingbinarydatatransfers,transferringvariablenumbersofbytesperchannel,rdlowingdatatransferwhileacquiring,andbydoingbasiccalculationsintheM3CA.
