Description
Delivered at the CSYMA National Staff Conference 2016, St Edmund's College Canberra. Largely based on the Faith Formation program at Marist College Canberra and the Service Learning facilitated with staff and students over the past six years. Service learning and social justice programs engage students in practical service or justice type activities at a local, national or international level. This workshop breaks open the three components of such programs: formation from the Gospel message about serving others, including the poor; practical hours committed to service activities; and finally, critical reflection about the learning experience completed through journaling and debriefing. Learning programs offer students an understanding of the Catholic School core value of service to others and a desire to serve the poor, which are both fundamental to the gospel message. Discusses how can we, as staff in Catholic Schools, give students hands-on opportunities to learn about sharing the love of God with others. Participants felt equipped with ideas for service learning and justice programs and some tools to implement them.
