  2007  MCA Projects Onwards  SCHOOL OF COMPUTER SCIENCETAMIL NADU OPEN UNIVERSITY, Chennai-600 025 GUIDELINES FOR PROJECT WORK MCA-26 Students can register for the Project work with Course Code MCA-26 in the Third Year and for registration purposes the Project work is treated as one Course,carrying a weight of 8 credits. OBJECTIVES The objective of the Project Course is to help the students to study, analyze anddesign software or utility for research problems focused in the recent journals orapplication of such software related to problems in the area of computer science.The development of algorithms and derivation with respect to theoreticalcomputer science in relevance to performance comparison, which will improvethe skills of software development of the students, will be another objective of the Project course.  PROJECT PROPOSAL Synopsis of the project should be prepared in consultation with the guide andsent to The Coordinator, Projects-MCA, School of Computer Science, TNOU,Directorate of Technical Educational Campus, Guindy, Chennai-600 025. Thesynopsis should clearly state the objectives and category of software to be usedand it should have full details of the Project, limitations if any for the project etc. PROJECT GUIDES 1.Faculty at the School of Computer Science, TNOU, Chennai. 2. Faculty employed in Colleges / Institutions in the Department of ComputerScience affiliated to any Indian University and having minimum five yearsof teaching experience. , , 600 025  School of Computer Science Tamil Nadu Open University Chennai   2007  MCA Projects Onwards  3.Academic counselors of TNOU are also eligible to guide the students forprojects. In such cases, the qualifications of the counselor, the name of the courses handled by him, years of experience in counselling along withthe name and CPC Number should be clearly mentioned. 4. To facilitate students, a list of Guides with their addresses is enclosed in Annexure-V and Coordinator of the CPC’s are instructed to help thestudents in contacting the guides in the list for their consent to guide thestudents in their project work.5.A Supervisor can not guide more than five students irrespective of academic/calendar year admissions.Students are advised to send project synopsis along with complete and dulysigned copy of a resume of the guide to The Coordinator, Projects-MCA, Schoolof Computer Science, TNOU, Directorate of Technical Education Campus, Guindy,Chennai-25. PROJECT PROPOSAL SUBMISSION AND APPROVAL  After finalizing the topic and the selection of the guide, the student should sendthe Project Proposal Proforma (Annexure –I) along with a copy of the synopsisand Bio-data of the guide (Annexure – II) to The Coordinator, Projects-MCA,School of Computer Science, TNOU, Directorate of Technical Education Campus,Guindy, Chennai-600 025 for approval. The proposal incomplete in any respectwill summarily be rejected and students are advised to retain a copy of thesynopsis and specifically proposals not accompanying a complete and signed Bio-Data of guide will not be considered for approval. The Project Proposal shouldbe submitted for the students who complete the course by the academicyear/calendar year respectively. COMMUNICATION OF APPROVAL , , 600 025  School of Computer Science Tamil Nadu Open University Chennai   2007  MCA Projects Onwards   A written communication regarding the approval / non-approval of the projectproposal will be sent to the student normally within a week of the receipt of theproposal by the school and as the students are expected to start the projectwork immediately on approval, it is informed that the communication of approvalwill be closed for the students who complete the course by the academicyear/calendar year. RESUBMISSION OF PROJECT PROPOSAL In case of non-approval of the proposal the comments / suggestions forreformulating the project will be communicated to you. In such cases therevised project synopsis should be submitted with a new project proposalproforma and a copy of the rejected synopsis and an earlier project proposalproforma bearing the comments of the evaluator and Project Proposal Numberallotted by the School of Computer Science. PROJECT REPORTFormulation a. The Project Report should not exceed 100 pages typed in Times NewRoman font of 12” size with 1.5 line spacing on a single side.b.The table of symbols, table of charts, table of diagrams with table of contents may be furnished at the beginning of the report separately.c.An abstract of source code may be given in an Appendix at the end of thereport, which should not exceed ten pages.d.The output of each module of the software may be given in a separate Appendix.e.It is desirable to include the derivational part of algorithms implementedin the softwaref.The system flowchart / program flowchart explaining the flow of themodule may be given in a separate Appendix. , , 600 025  School of Computer Science Tamil Nadu Open University Chennai   2007  MCA Projects Onwards  g.The data flow diagrams, E-R diagrams, decision tables if at all required inthe modules depending upon the choice of the project will lead toevaluation of Projects easily, hence recommended.h.The front cover page must be uniform and adhere to the Annexure – IIIwith respective title of the project and other relevant particulars.i.The Project Report should also contain the following:i.Copy of the approved Project Proforma. ii. Certificates of srcinality of the work duly signed by the studentand the guide given in Annexure – IV must be enclosed. SUBMISSION OF PROJECT REPORT One typed copy of the project report is to be submitted to the Controller of Examinations, TNOU, Chennai-600 025 along with a fee, which would beintimated later. For Academic Year students who submit their Project Reportsbefore June 30 th , the results will be declared along with the June term-endexaminations and for Calendar year students who submit their Project Reportbefore December 31 st , the results will be declared along with the Decemberterm-end examinations. The students are requested to fill in and collect anacknowledgement from the Examination Section of the Controller’s Office.  VIVA-VOCE The student may be asked to appear for a Viva-Voce and he/she should be ableto defend his explanation with the help of soft copy of the software ready to beexecuted in a computer system along with other system tools available. In suchcases she / he will be duly intimated about the exact date and venue of the viva-voce examination. MARKS FOR PROJECT , , 600 025  School of Computer Science Tamil Nadu Open University Chennai
