Eckleburg Review "It's a fantastic issue. The most exciting and adventurous and gutsiest new magazine I've seen in years." Stephen Dixon  POETRY | “Heroism,” Or After Art History On February 12, 2014 by Daniel Bosch Gustave Courbet, L’Origine du Monde , 1866 Vernix-spangled, his face beef-pink,Like Perseus fated to slayHis nemesis without meetingHer mortal gaze, like OrpheusForbidden to look back untilHe’d brought forth from the underworldThe one so loved the wound of lossNever healed, but kept on bleeding,The newborn lets the uterusManhandle him, shape him the way A god makes a man out of spit,Mud, a borrowed rib, and wattle, An extrusion always bloodied, Always concluding in a streakedBlue cord and the fat-starred applauseOf the placenta, still feeblyBreathing for him—it’s all him, he’sThe one, I thought, though his blue eyesCan’t see, for whom Gustave paintedHis dark L’Origine du Monde . ButI didn’t know yet it was cutFrom a reclining, full-length nude,  An odalisque, a wanker’s aid, A patron’s painting, made for cash And not the sort of thing that bearsMuch looking (to see, one must haveBoth hands free)–I didn’t know yetThat l’srcine of L’OrigineDu Monde  was as miraculous And banal as my own–that noMan-god, no blind-sighted heroFinds invisible truth on small,White rectangles. So, art historyDiminishes the mysteryOf genius and deep mastery,Leaving in its place a small frame, A pair of scissors, and a nameSo clever that it could not beResisted, even by Courbet,Who retains a kind of hero’sGlamor, even at this distance,Even in this world, where evenI am a kind of hero, to me.  Search READ NOW!Gertrude Stein Award In Fiction $1000Franz Kafka Award In Magic Realism $1000 AboutBookstoreContentsGalleryWorkshopsAwardsSubmitRue De Fleurus SalonMy AccountDC Lit  2/1/14 8:56 PMThe Doctor T.
