The role of business in society has been debated in economic literature for a long time. By the term „Corporate Social Responsibility‟ (CSR), what is generally understood is that business has an  obligation to society that extends beyond its narrow obligation to its owners or shareholders. This idea has been discussed throughout the twentieth century, but it was Howard R. Bowen‟s book on   “Social Responsibilities of Businessman” published in 1953, which was the srcin of the modern  debate on the subject. Bowen reasoned that there would be general social and economic benefits that  would accrue to society, if business recognized broader social goals in its decisions.
