The campus design and landscape aim to support training and exemplify sustainability. The Spanish energy company Iberdrola held an architectural competition or a campus dedicated to thecorporate training o its employees at San Agustín de Guadalix on the site o a ormer learning centreon the outskirts o Madrid. The project presented here was among those submitted; its philosophy isbased on two aims:1. To create a sustainable education campus, where architecture and nature serve as cultural elementsconveying values o environmental harmony and quality.2. To generate an urbanistic/architectural space using renewable energy to promote sustainability andillustrate the identity o the company promoting the campus. The present project demonstrates thecapacity both to educate and to portray itsel as an example o sustainability and respect or nature. SUStainaBle eDUCation CamPUS “The curriculum embedded in any building instructs as fully and powerfully as any course taught in it.”  (David Orr, 2002) th ccp The frst lesson that a student receives is that provided by the campus, which should be a lesson incoherence, natural beauty and quality. To build a quality physical ramework, nature and architecturemust be more than a landscape setting and become teaching materials in themselves.The sustainable education campus oers an environment which can stimulate educational activity,enhancing ormal learning with the aesthetic component designed into the academic inrastructure.Human behaviour can be moulded by an environment that arouses an appetite or excellence and anunderstanding o the qualities latent in nature. i pcc The Madrid campus project incorporates basic geometric shapes. There are two reasons or this: frstly, toencourage appreciation o the visual meaning in the dierent volumes; and, secondly, to associate eachshape with types and uses o renewable energy. Any placeon campus is a potential site or meetings and educational events, thus this complex gives pedestrianspriority over wheeled trafc.Architecture can show people how to relate to nature, teaching ecological values and environmentalsustainability. That is the reason this San Agustín de Guadalix project advocates architecture dedicatedto educating mankind, combining artistic and intellectual leadership with a commitment to its socialcontext. DeSign, treatment anD materialS “As a kind of city in microcosm, it [the campus] has been shaped by the desire to create an ideal community, and has often been a vehicle for expressing the utopian social vision of the Americanimagination.”  (Paul Venable Turner, 1984)The campus is organised in three sections representing the sun, water and wind, as mentioned above.Each section is planned as an environment or the renewable energies o the Iberdrola company:ã the sun: solar energy;ã water: hydraulic energy;ã wind: electrical energy.   PEB Exchange  2008/10 – ISSN 1609-7548 – © OECD 2008 Sustainable Education Campus in Spain: Nature and Architecture for Training  The design incorporates energy rom renewable sources. Photovoltaic and thermal solar panels and ageothermal energy system provide electricity or the whole complex and oer a research rameworkor sta. Electricity, in combination with strategies such as solar shading, thermal mass to cool andnatural ventilation, are used or the centralised production o the power necessary or the campus’air-conditioning and heating. Fan-coils installed in the interior spaces allow independent regulation o each area.The characteristics o the area were studied to ensure that the urbanistic/architectural proposal wouldbe properly rooted. They are as ollows: upper Mesomediterranean bioclimatic belt, moderately dry,sandy-grained silica soils, average temperatures o 14.4º C and precipitation o around 469 mm. Theproject proposes a specifc treatment or the dierent campus sections, vegetation and new trees in linewith these characteristics.Native grasses would be planted in the general garden areas at minimal cost (EUR 200/hectare). Pools,in addition to oering visual relie, would contribute to the campus by reshening certain areas with abreeze and serving as a storage cistern to supply the complex and or use in fre fghting.Ecological binding materials such as recycled powdered glass would cover paths and road suraces.The project pays special attention to the roos o the buildings (the so-called “fth açade o architecture”).For sustainability, ecologically green types o roofng and storage would be combined.
